Guide For Using WoodIndex.html
Like most people trying to use the Bliss edition of Anthony à Wood's
Athenæ Oxonienses, I was frustrated by the poor indexing. So
I created a sortable index.
You are welcome to use the index on this site, but you will not be able to
link directly to the volumes of Athenæ Oxonienses. (Not would
you want to: it would be way too slow.). To get full use out of this
index, make a local copy and download the volumes, following these
instructions:
- Create a directory. For the purpose of these instructions, we will call it
C:\Wood
.
- Save the sortable index. in
C:\Wood
using your browser's File->Save page as...
menu option.
- If you want the index to be sortable, download Stuart Landridge's
sorttable.js
to the same directory.
- Download the black-and-white PDF versions of Athenæ Oxonienses
from archive.org. The links are:
These are large files, and each may take several minutes to load. When they
load in your browser (or in a browser helper program), save them in
C:\Wood
.
- Open the local copy of the index using your browser's "File->open" or
"File->open file" menu. Browse to
C:\Wood
and select the file
WoodIndex
or WoodIndex.html
.
- Now you should be able to use the links in the index. Some older versions
of Adobe Reader will not open to the correct page when you click a "Col" link.
If this happens, just tab to the "page" widgit and type in the corresponding
number from the "page" column of the index.
- To sort the table (if you have downloaded sorttable.js), just click on a
table heading. (It is sloooow, but eventually you will get a sorted
list).
